Oakland Roots Introduce Technical Consultant, Longtime US Youth National Team Coach, Eric Yamamoto

Eric Yamamoto will serve as a Technical Consultant for the Roots. Yamamoto will provide insight into the Roots’ player, coaching and technical staff development. He will also be tasked with helping to build the club’s inaugural Founders Cup roster.

The former NCAA Champion and All-American recently finished his 27th season as a coach for his alma mater, Santa Clara University. He has deep Bay Area ties at all levels of soccer, including experience developing youth players for renowned U.S. Soccer Development Academy De Anza Force.

In addition to his work locally, Yamamoto has served as an assistant with the U.S. men’s and women’s national teams at many different levels. He has over 20 years of experience working with the U.S. Soccer youth national team scene. Yamamoto also served as San Francisco’s Director of Competition for the Copa Centenario in 2016.

Over the years, Yamamoto has worked with some of the top professional players to come out of the Bay Area. That list includes former MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Joe Cannon, former Broncos and San Jose Earthquakes players Mehdi Ballouchy and Ryan Cochrane, and current Portland Timbers goalkeeper Kendall McIntosh. He also worked with recent U.S. men’s national team and Earthquakes right back Nick Lima, former Santos Laguna Midfielder Benji Joya, and former Liverpool Academy and Earthquakes midfielder Marc Pelosi while serving as technical director for De Anza Force.

Yamamoto holds an MBA from Santa Clara University.
