Oakland, Calif. (July 4, 2019) – Oakland Roots have signed winger Dembakwi “Boxi” Yomba.

“Dembakwi brings great pedigree as a former U.S. youth international and spending time at Atletico Madrid as a young player,” said Roots Technical Consultant Eric Yamamoto. “He will also give the group some punch as an attacker, and has some great experience as a professional player here domestically.”

Yomba, 22, was part of the vaunted Atletico Madrid youth program from 2014-15, and went on to sign his first professional contract with Orlando City B, the Major League Soccer team’s USL affiliate. After one season with Orlando, Yomba signed with Reno 1868, San Jose Earthquakes’ USL affiliate. He scored on his professional debut on May 18, 2017, tallying in a 4-3 extra-time win against Seattle’s OSA FC in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup. He represented the Earthquakes in a friendly against Eintracht Frankfurt in July 2017. Yomba was born in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
