Oakland, CA - Oakland Roots are pleased to announce the addition of Bay Area native Zach Cohen to the front office as Director of Social Equity and Community Partnerships. In his role with Oakland Roots, Cohen will serve the club, overseeing the clubs engagements with local government, community stakeholders, and local residents. In his role Cohen will work alongside Senior VP of Impact and Social Enterprise, Mike Geddes, to implement the Roots’ community benefit model, which is rooted in delivering a soccer platform capable of economically driving social impact for the Oakland community.
A Berkeley High School graduate, Cohen brings with him an extensive background leading professional sports organizations in their community based efforts and programming. Cohen has served in numerous positions centered on community engagement and public benefit, including sitting on the boards of several highly respected Oakland based nonprofits and community based foundations. Most recently, he worked as the Executive Director of the Oakland A’s Community Fund where he played a pivotal role in implementing the “Rooted in Oakland” campaign spearheaded by numerous community based initiatives. Prior to the Athletics, Cohen spent a combined 10 years working with the Golden State Warriors, including a combined two and half years as the Program Manager and as the Interim Executive Director of their Community Foundation. Club President and Director of Soccer, Benno Nagel, had this to say on Cohen being the latest addition to an organization “It’s not too often that someone of Zach’s caliber, both personally and professionally, is available to join a startup sports project like ours. He possesses a true commitment to the Oakland community, which his past work roles and current community commitments make clear. Zach brings not only a shared vision of what our project can accomplish but more importantly, he possesses extensive “hands on” experience working with Oakland community leaders, elected officials, and community based organizations on real issues facing our community. His knowledge of the issues, the stakeholders involved and the opportunity to leverage a pro sports platform to play a positive role in helping to advance the amazing work already being done here in Oakland will be an invaluable asset to our organization. We are beyond lucky to have Zach and look forward to working with him to deliver something special to both the local soccer community and Oakland community in general.”
Sharing in the enthusiasm for the hire of Cohen, Oakland Roots lead investor, Steven Aldrich, said, “I’m thrilled that Zach is joining. We are assembling a high quality, community-driven team off the field to bring the Roots on to the pitch in 2019.”
Please join us in welcoming Zach Cohen to the Oakland Roots family.
